Excavating & Grading

Excavation & Grading Done On Grade, On Schedule

Concrete only lasts as long as the ground under it. Eagle Eye's earthwork crew handles the dig, the grade, and the drainage so the pad is right before a form ever goes down — site prep, trenching, cut and fill, and grading corrections for homeowners, builders, and commercial sites across the Colorado Front Range.

What we dig

  • Site preparation — clearing, tree and stump removal, stripping topsoil, and demolition of old slabs, footings, and structures.
  • Rough and fine grading to a laser or GPS level, shaping the lot so water runs where it should and pads sit at plan elevation.
  • Cut and fill — balancing a sloped lot, building up a low building pad, and placing engineered structural fill in compacted lifts.
  • Trenching for water, sewer, gas, electrical, roof drains, and footings, dug to line and grade, bedded, backfilled, and compacted.
  • Foundation and slab excavation — over-dig for footings, garage and shop slabs, and stem walls, with the sub-grade prepped for the pour.
  • Drainage correction — regrading around a foundation, cutting swales, and setting area drains, French drains, and dry wells.
  • Gravel and base — driveways, parking pads, and road base placed and rolled to density.
  • Haul-off and import of spoil, structural fill, road base, and topsoil.

Front Range soil and why prep matters

Much of the Front Range sits on expansive clay and claystone bedrock. These soils swell with moisture and shrink as they dry, and that movement is what heaves driveways, cracks garage slabs, and tips retaining walls. The fix is not a thicker slab — it is controlling the sub-grade: over-excavating the worst material, moisture-conditioning what stays, compacting in lifts to a target density, and getting surface water away from the structure so the clay never gets the chance to move. We build the pad to that standard whether the concrete on top is ours or another contractor's.

Utilities and 811

Every job starts with a Colorado 811 locate, and we hand-expose around marked lines before machine digging near them. On properties with private irrigation, propane, or low-voltage lines that 811 does not mark, we arrange a private locate so nothing gets cut.

Working with your builder or the same crew

We do earthwork as a standalone service for general contractors and homeowners, and we do it as the first phase of our own driveway, commercial flatwork, and retaining wall projects. When it is all Eagle Eye, there is no gap between the grading crew and the concrete crew — the same people who set the grade set the forms.

Questions

Excavating FAQ

Do you locate utilities before you dig?

Yes. We call in a Colorado 811 locate before any digging and hand-expose around marked lines. On sites with private lines that 811 does not cover — irrigation, propane, low-voltage — we arrange a private locate.

Can you fix a yard that drains toward the house?

That’s one of the most common calls we get. We re-establish positive slope away from the foundation, cut swales to carry water to the street or a suitable outfall, and can set area drains and dry wells where grading alone won’t do it.

What size equipment do you run?

Compact excavators, skid steers, and a laser or GPS level for grade work, which fit through a standard gate and are easy on an established yard. For larger cut and fill or commercial site work we bring in the size the job calls for.

Do you haul away the dirt, or do I keep it?

Your choice. We can stockpile spoil on site for reuse, spread it where you want fill, or haul it off and dispose of it. Import of structural fill or topsoil is handled the same way and is a line item on the estimate.

Do you provide compaction testing?

When a slab, footing, or an engineer’s spec requires it, we compact in lifts and coordinate density testing so there is documentation the pad was built to grade and to spec before anything is poured on it.
